Trick Training #1 - Novice
Come out an play with your dog. Tricks are fun to learn for everyone. Students will be taught the various methods used to teach dogs to perform tricks
Basic learning theory will be covered. 15 - 20 Tricks covered, including:

The advanced class will include healing/dancing to music. Each student will be encouraged to put together a short routine of tricks.
Tricks at this level include:
Hide & seek, find the toys, weave walking, back up through legs, pull a rope, sit pretty, bring a tissue, roll a ball, pick pocket and more
At the end of this class, dogs may apply for their ATD - Advanced Trick Dog and ETD - Expert Trick Dog titles

*Dogs and handlers will be introduced to safe and accurate performance of the various agility obstacles running in straight lines with their dogs. This class builds upon the foundation work from the previous class. Short handling sequences will be introduced dog/handler teams must be able to perform all obstacles and perform basic agility behaviors to progress to the next level. (Proficient at targeting to hand and on the ground on the, low teeter, dog walk, a-frame. Jumps, table, tunnels from a distance of 1m, chute with short fabric, tire, correct weave poles entry, start line stay, front cross, short handling sequence of 6 obstacles with one change of side)

This Class is for any dogs/handlers that want to work on courses/skill building or do problem solving on any equipment. Dogs must be proficient on all equipment and progressing toward 12 straight weave poles. Each class is structured per student requests and dog challenges. This class can be done in combination with the Pre-trial class.

Trick Training #1 - the basics
Come out an play with your dog. Tricks are fun to learn for everyone. Students will be taught the various methods used to teach dogs to perform tricks
Basic learning theory will be covered. 15 - 20 Tricks covered, including:
crawl, take a bow, shake a paw (both paws), targeting, back up, kisses, spin circles,
jump over arms and/or legs and many more.
At the end of 6 lessons, dogs may apply to qualify for their NTD - Novice Trick Dog Title

We need a few Master Level Dogs to attend a Fun Match for a Masters Judging Practice Clinic.

Dogs that are high level Advanced dogs would also work. The purpose of this match is to provide new Master level AAC judges with Judging experience.

First off I want to tell everyone that we have day boarding available 7 days a week for all dogs of any age. Advanced Agility#4 - $160.00 for 6 weeks ( Wed, April 28/2010 8:10-9:20 -class is 1hr -includes clean up time). INDOORS at Dozen Roses Farm Advanced agility Skills, pre-requisite –Intermediate Agility This Class builds on the Intermediate agility skills and dog must already be on all full sized equipment. Along with this dogs/handlers will also be taught more complex handling skills, challenges and cues. Dogs must be proficient on all equipment at full height, successfully be able to maneuver a front cross, 90 degree turn, serpentine and pinwheel and also progressing toward 12 straight weave poles in order to move to competition agility

TWO half-day seminar hosted by Country Lane Pet Resort – Bowmanville, on Saturday Sept.19/09
Join us for a half-day (morning or afternoon) of agility with Tricia Waples and Sharon Dunsmore. There will be 2 courses setup (Standard & Jumper in AM and Gamble & Snooker in afternoon) which Tricia and Sharon will lead you through while teaching you how to read a course map, how to walk a course as well as discussing various handling options that will optimize the skills of each dog/handler team. Rules and discussions of requirements to competing will also be covered.
Pre-requisites: Participants should be proficient on all pieces of equipment at full height and have good handler focus to attend as a dog/handler team. Since this will be a handling and course reading seminar, there will not be a focus on individual obstacle performance.
Dogs that have already completed the Country Lane Pet Resort “Intro to agility “and are currently working in the “Intermediate, Advanced or Masters ” courses may join this seminar as a working team. Others that are progressing to this level may attend as an auditor (without dog), which will provide the attendee(s) with a copy of all handouts as well an opportunity to walk the courses with the group to learn how to read and analyze them. Auditor’s dogs will not be able to participate in the seminar.
About Tricia Waples Tricia has been participating in the sport of agility since 2000. Prior to becoming involved in dog sports, Tricia raised and trained horses for competition in Western games and racing. Her approach to dog training is based on practical experience resting on a solid foundation of knowledge. Tricia is continually reading, attending seminars and researching topics on canine behaviour and dog training of all types. In June 2009, Tricia competed at the AAC Regionals with all 3 of her dogs (Tria, Chelsea and L’eQuippe) placing in the top 10 in their divisions with her youngest dog (L'eQuippe, 2 yrs old) finishing 5th in her division. Tricia will be competing at the AAC Nationals in August this year.
We welcome Tricia to Country Lane Pet Resort with her fresh and motivational approach to agility training. Over the past year she has created her own training program to prepare students to move to new levels of confidence and communication between dog and handler.
About Sharon Dunsmore Sharon Dunsmore was educated as Clinical Nurse Educator for Critical Care Units but has slowly changed her long time hobby with dogs into a large successful business and left the nursing profession. A professional dog trainer for the past 20 years, Sharon currently runs K9 Klubhouse Behavioral Consultation and Dog Training , organizes and runs about 7-9 Agility Trials per year both for CKC and AAC and is a CKC and AAC Agility Judge. In addition, for the past 25 years Sharon has been breeding, showing and playing in various dog sports with her Bearded Collies and has a huge interest in the many issues that face reputable breeders today.
Sharon’s teaching knowledge and program creation skills in Obedience, show handling, rally o and of course agility to name a few have given her the background of no other in the industry. We welcomed Sharon to Country Lane Pet Resort in 2007 as a master’s instructor and she has since prepared many of our students to compete with their dogs in AAC and CKC trials.
What to Bring: Participants are asked to bring a crate and shade for their dog as there will be quite a bit of discussion and course walking. The dogs will need some down time so they can relax in between work sessions. Handlers need to bring toys, treats and water for their dogs. Also, it is recommended that participants bring a pen and clipboard so that they may take notes

Here is what we have starting in June:
PUPPY CLASS for puppies eyes only! (9-16 weeks old)
This course is designed to teach you how to raise your puppy to be a great family pet.. New information about dogs, how they learn and are socialized point out the importance of doing as much work as you can before the age of 16 weeks in a positive manner. Teaching them what we want early is much easier than fixing later. Management techniques for in home training will be discussed such as housetraining, puppy biting and nipping. This course will have structured off leash play sessions to give you opportunity to teach your dog to come and pay attention to you even in the presence of distractions. Your puppy will learn the beginning stages of Pay Attention, Come, Sit, Walk on leash.Clicker Training will be introduced.

Well spring is in the air and we all have the itch to get outside, then discover the back yard full of the newly reveled dog doo doo...

Hi everyone,

I work in the personal care industry full time and have longed for this site to open and now it is here!
This website is meant for personal care products but many products found in the animal industry are the same as our own products minus all the fragrance, actives etc.

Take any ingredient label (good luck finding one on animal products.. ha!) type in the ingredients to see the safety information, the function and any other information about that raw material.

I am on a mission to make pet product companies supply ingredient labels (ILN) for any product I SELL – I am having some trouble since the law here in Canada and the US is not forcing them to do so.. but the more of us push to see the label the better.

Keep that in mind when you see “ALL NATURAL” .. natural means every material on earth if you want to get technical.. research each and every material

Start off the New Year with some dog training!

Basic obedience training for dogs using learning theory, work your brain with your dogs in this group setting for 6 weeks. If you come with an open mind and apply all of our techniques we suggest, when you are finished, you will have the basic knowledge to continue to train your dog yourself for sit, stay, off, walking on loose lead, focus (on you the trainer and not some other distracting dog/person ) create a bond with your dog, and have fun and relax in any new situation!

Starting Jan 10th or when we have 6 dogs to run the class. Cost is 160.00 and must be paid in advance to class start. It's the time of year again where we find ourselves racing around like crazy people trying to find all the wonderful items we feel we need to make our Christmas perfect. Sometimes it is difficult to not get caught up in all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
This year at Country Lane Pet Resort we wanted to do something different. We wanted to try and make a difference in someone else's life. We decided that we would hold a food drive in support of the Salvation Army. After I made one simple phone call to the Salvation Army office we had our food bin in a matter of hours. Then within a few weeks, our food bin was full! It was so easy to help make someone else's Christmas a little better.
I would like to thank all our clients and staff that supported our food drive this year and look forward to doing it again Christmas 2009.

CANADA GROOMS 2008!

This year Jen, Val and myself (Anna) had the pleasure of attending Canada Grooms 2008 in Oakville. Our day was full of grooming demonstrations, guest speakers and time to investigate all of the newest and coolest grooming tools, grooming products, innovative new inventions, as well as cute and fun products for the family pet.

Yvonne Norton demonstrates how to achieve the perfect English Setter tail while Nancy Bryson makes sure "King" is comfortable on the table.
The almost finished product of Yvonne's very talented handy work. It was amazing how quickly she groomed this Setter. He looked fantastic!

There were a ton of hilarious costumes and outfits for your pet. I couldn't pull myself away from this booth. Skunks, dragons, bumblebees if you could think it, it was probably there. Too cute!!

There's Val stocking up on lots of goodies! This was one of the popular spots to be. Not only were there great products to be seen and purchased but the prices were fantastic too. Although Jen and myself are not groomers we also walked out with plenty of products to try on our own pets.

By the end of the day, I had a new found respect for groomers. Not only are these people hard working individuals who have to make sure they are keeping their clients, both human and animal happy, but they are also extremely creative and talented. We really enjoyed seeing each demonstration and appreciate the knowledge that each guest speaker/groomer shared with us. This whole experience almost made me want to pick up a pair of shears (that would be scissors in groomer language) and try my hand at grooming but I think I will leave it up to the experts.

I can't believe the summer has passed already! It has got me thinking about getting all the dogs groomed before it gets too cold outside!

Where Did The Summer Go?

Can you believe that Autumn is really here? Before we know it there will be snow on the ground and Christmas lights glowing up the neighborhoods. Where did the summer go? Seems to me it may have been washed away with all the rain we had. However, we were really lucky to have beautiful weather at our funmatch back in June. The sun was shining and everyone had a blast with their dogs.

We looked around for an indoor facility this year so we could continue teaching classes throughout the winter. We're excited to start our new indoor classes next week! We'll be at Dozen Roses Farm on Taunton Rd, just west of Country Lane Pet Resort.

Unlike conventional bathing processes, our grooming system offers the following advantages:

• Reduced time for bathing
• Little need for drying
• Deep cleansing without removing the skins natural oils leading to dry, itchy skin
• No residuals (soap, fragrance, etc) that can cause irritation and hold dirt
• Gentle enough to use daily
• Combined with a specialized hospital grade solution it can cleanse hot spots, skin allergy irritations, hives, flakey skin, itchy skin,wounds and surgical incisions (stitches) and STINKY skin.

Well, it was a race against time but we accomplished what we set out to do. The kennel looks fantastic and we should all be proud of the great job we did. As Paula said on Saturday, it feels like you are walking into someone's home now that we have freshly painted walls, fabulous curtains and clean, streamline floors. Laurel did a great job with the curtains and picked suitable patterns and colors to compliment each room. Val used her great painting talent to make our office look even better then before. Without the manpower (or should I say womanpower, ha ha!) of Jehn, Sandra and Sonja, I'm not sure if we would of finished on time. Mike completed all the repairs that were needed and made sure we were fed well every lunch hour-thanks Mike! Here we all are looking snazzy in our painting gear!

Clean up in Progress- shutdown from Sept 22-27

We are planning a major clean up for the facility this week. You may have noticed that we have blocked off Sept 22-27th. The reason for this is so that we can have an empty kennel for power washing and painting. Typically we do this once a year -and we are taking all precautions with paint fumes and exhaust from the power washer (gas). Each room will be repainted, dirt/film free and odor free. How kennel & dog owners can reduce the stress felt by kennelled dogs
In this guide we look at:
Away from home
What makes kennel life stressful for dogs?
What kennel owners can do to reduce stress
How dog owners can reduce stress for their pets
How to choose the best kennels for your dog
Away from home
No matter what steps are taken to make dogs feel at home, the kennel environment is so different from that of a pet home, that it is natural for them to undergo some stress during their stay.
It is possible for kennel owners to minimise this stress & dog owners should seek out those kennels that make the effort to do so
Reducing stress for dogs in kennels has obvious advantages for the dogs themselves, and their owners will feel more at ease if they know that the kennel owner cares about the dogs they look after.
For kennel owners, this trust means repeat business!
Having found a kennel that cares, owners are likely to keep coming back &a good reputation will spread by word of mouth

Why stress MUST be minimised in kennels:
Excessive stress in kennels will leave dogs susceptible to:
Depression
Dietary disturbances and eventually illness due to a compromised immune system.
What makes kennel life stressful for dogs?
This will vary from dog to dog depending on what they find disturbing, but many dogs will find many of the following stressful:
Absence of owners/ lack of sufficient social contact
Lack of control over environment, particularly in bare or cramped kennels
Changes in routine – feeding times, walking time, having to toilet on concrete unless walked
Sudden change in diet – possibly leading to diarrhoea and further distress for a house trained dog
Lack of exercise / opportunity to play
Loud noise - from barking from other dogs due to large numbers or poor construction of kennels, or if loud music is played constantly
Presence of and handling by strangers
Presence and proximity of other dogs
Unfamiliar smells– particularly disinfectant
Unfamiliar noises
Difference in temperature from that at home (no time for coat to adapt to changes) – particularly stressful for short-coated and thin-coated breeds kept in cold conditions, or thick-coated dogs kept in warm kennels
Lack of physical comfort – particularly if no bedding given
Lack of familiar items that smell of home, e.g. bedding, toys, items with owners scent
Lack of continuity of veterinary care if kennel uses the local vet practice instead of the animal’s own vet.
How Dog Owners can reduce the stress for their pets:-
Allow plenty of time to deliver your dog to the kennels so you are not in a last minute panic and pushed for time. Otherwise, your stress will be communicated to your dog and it is better if he leaves you when you are relaxed and happy
Take a written or typed list of your dog’s ailments, medications, food intake and other special requirements
Your dog’s up-to-date vaccination certificate
Take a few day’s supply of your dog’s normal food, together with your dog’s bed (unwashed), favourite toys, chews and treatsif the kennel will allow you to do so
Take items made of natural fabric that smell of you and will retain your comforting scentfor a few days while your dog settles in
When you leave, try to be jolly and matter of fact, rather than consoling, so your dog thinks there is nothing to worry about
A young dog may benefit from a few days in kennels every so often early in life so they get used to the experience and find it easier to cope with a longer stay
What Kennel Owners can do to reduce stress
Some of the stressors listed above are part of kennel life and cannot be avoided. Some stressors may be costly to avoid and may need to be offered at extra cost to the customer. Other stressors may be easily avoided with a little time and effort.
Social contact:
Top of the list and often in short supply due to its fulfilment being labour intensive, is social contact.
Dogs have inherited social tendencies from their ancestors and this has been accentuated in those dogs bred to work closely with man or to be a companion. Since most dogs retained in boarding kennels come from a pet home, lack of adequate social contact can be top of the list of stressors.
A cost-effectiveway to combat this is to employ staff that like dogs and who will maintain a cheerful, relaxed attitude, talking and making a fuss of them during routine cleaning and maintenance activities.
In addition, giving staff extra time to spend several minutes per day with each dog playing, grooming, stroking them and giving treats for compliance with requests will result in
higher staffing ratios but also in happier, more contented dogs, a benefit that can be marketed to the customer
Well-managed staff who like dogs and who have a friendly, efficient approach can substantially reduce tension in the kennel and are probably the most important factor in reducing stress levels.
Investing in staff and ensuring they are happy in their work will bring considerable improvements for the dogs in their care.
Avoiding sudden changes
Where possible, changes to routine should be kept to a minimum to avoid stress, particularly with vulnerable dogs (e.g. puppies, elderly dogs, disabled dogs, dogs on medication, or fearful dogs). This particularly applies to feeding routines.
Owners can be asked to bring in a few days supply of food so the change over to kennel food can be made gradually, or they can be asked to supply food for the duration of their stay if preferred, thereby reducing the kennel food bill.
While providing for individual needs does increase the organisation needed, it has considerable benefits for the dogs for a little extra effort
Control over environment and reduction of environmental stimuli
Kennel Design
Thoughtful kennel design allows individual dogs to make choices about where they want to be at any given moment. The provision of a separate sleeping area and a run gives flexibility for the dog and a larger kennel will allow more choice of places to rest, play or explore. Further areas can created without increasing the size of the kennel by providing carefully positioned low shelves for the dog to rest on. This shelving allows the dog to look over adjoining areas, providing interest and variety of outlook.
Kennel noise and disturbance can be reduced by keeping numbers low in each block (if possible, or when rebuilding).
Music
Playing relaxing classical music has been shown to further relax dogs in a kennel. However, this must NOT be left on all the time!
Temperature & Ventilation
To avoid discomfort and further stress, temperature and ventilation levels should be adequate for comfort of dogs used to a home environment.
Comfort items from home
The provision of bedding, preferably the animals own, together with toys and chews (preferably those left by the owner) can help dogs to relax.
Owners should be encouraged to bring items , but told that they may not be returned in good condition since the dog is likely to chew and destroy them while they are away.
Toys and bedding from home will be familiar and will smell of home, helping the dog to settle more quickly.
Strangers
Staff should be aware of the concerns some dogs have over the presence of and being handled by strangers. Taking the time to make friends with the dog will help when routine handling is required.
Staff should be well trained in dog behaviour to help them to read their body language and be sensitive to their needs.
Other Dogs
Staff need to be aware of the stress caused to some dogs by the presence of other dogs
Careful placementof the dogs in kennels can help to balance the needs of shy or fearful dogs by avoiding placing them next to aggressive or overpowering dogs, particularly if kennels have wire rather than solid partitions between the runs. Staff also need to be sensitive to a dog’s concerns about other dogs when moving them around the kennels, taking care to avoid aggressive or noisy dogs if possible.
Placing ‘difficult’ dogs at the end of a block to avoid having to take all the other dogs past each day can really help to reduce stress levels.
Smell & Disinfectant
To a dog’s sensitive nose, disinfectant is a powerful smell. Making sure the kennels are well rinsed after being disinfected can help to reduce the residual smell. Having a bucket and shovel outside each kennel specially for that occupant can help reduce the spread of disease and make it unnecessary to completely disinfect each kennel every day. This helps to save time & disinfectant and also improves life for the dog kept in the kennels, as well as helping to keep the kennel dry.
Enriching the stay of kennelled dogs
The following are suggested as ideas for providing dogs with interest during their stay. Although they may require extra staff time, customers may appreciate and be prepared to pay for the extra care their dog receives.
Social contact with staff in the form of stroking, grooming, treats for compliance with requests
Daily walks and/or the chance to run free in a large area
Play with toys with staff
Toys left in the run for dogs to play with. Toys need to be strong, large enough not to be easily swallowed and be able to withstand being disinfected before being passed on to another dog
Toys that can be filled with the dog’s dinner or with treats, such as kongs or activity balls, can help to relieve the boredom of confinement. These can be washed and disinfected after use
Chews – rawhide or other chews can be given during the day while staff are there to supervise
Provide interest in the run by hanging old tyres and encouraging them to play with them by hiding treats inside
Provide interest and relief from heat stress in summer by placing hard plastic children’s paddling pools in the run and adding a few inches of water
Float treats or pieces of vegetable or fruit on the water in the dog’s water bowl
Add interest to the view by placing a bird feeder nearby, but at a safe distance so that birds cannot be caught.
If the kennel walls are solid, arrange strategically placed peepholes so that dogs can see what is going on
Veterinary care
Due to the increased stress levels associated with life in kennels, it is not surprising that dogs are more likely to develop illness while at the kennels. If the dog has existing conditions that the owner has not left details of, or has history of certain problems, these may not be taken into account unless the dog’s usual vet is called during illness. This lack of continuity of veterinary care can compromise the dog’s health and so it is recommended that the veterinary surgeon that the owners regularly use is called if the dog develops a health problem during their stay.
Special care for vulnerable dogs
Special care is needed for vulnerable dogs, such as puppies, elderly dogs, disabled dogs, dogs on medication, nervous/fearful dogs, or dogs with a high activity level. All such dogs will need special care and will require extra time to ensure that all their needs are meet.
Pairs of dogs
While it is comforting for many dogs to be kennelled with a familiar dog, it is important to watch for signs that all may not be right.
Staff will need to be able to notice antagonistic body language and displays and may need to separate them to prevent fighting and injury. This becomes
particularly important when dogs that differ in size are kept together.
Socialising and mixing dogs
Mixing dogs from different households is not recommended unless with permission from the owner and if there is a member of staff which enough well. For some dogs, play time with other dogs is a great stress reliever and also a good energy release, but care needs to be taken and expert supervision is required.
How to choose the best kennels for your dog
Choose the kennels where your dog will stay carefully.Compile a checklist of questions to ask from the information given above for kennel owners and visit several kennels to find the best in your area. Make an appointment to view the kennels rather than just turning up so that it is convenient for kennel owner and they will have time to answer your questions.
Be sure to view well in advance of when you need the kennels as good ones get booked up early, especially during busy holiday periods.
Above all else, choose a place where the staff are interested in and like animals! Dogs are social animals and fare best with kind, empathetic and professional staff to care for them.
If the choice is betweenkennels with miserable, difficult staff and a kennels with friendly staff that really care, choose the latter.
Find a kennels where staff are friendly, polite and interact easily with dogs and the customers. Surly, ill-at-ease staff are likely to be poisonous with the dogs in their care and such establishments are best avoided.
Choose a place where there is sufficient staff to give individual care.
If the kennels claim to walk all dogs, ask for how long and then do the sums to see if there are enough staff to make this possible. Staff are expensive, especially if they are well trained and good quality, so expect to pay more for a better service.
The kennels should be clean, tidy and welcoming.
The housing for the dogs should be at the correct temperature, and dry.
There should be no smell, and proper food storage facilities should be available.
Check the dogs to see if they look happy and settled. There will be initial barking as you walk in, but this should settle quickly in a well run kennels as stress levelss will be low.

Indoor training will be at a local riding barn called Dozen Roses Farm at 2090 Taunton Rd. in Courtice - note that it is not heated for winter sessions and is fitted with a dirt floor.

Kennel clean up week coming up Sept 22-27

We are planning a major clean up for the facility this week. You may have noticed that we have blocked off Sept 22-27th. The reason for this is so that we can have an empty kennel for power washing and painting. Typically we do this once a year -and we are taking all precautions with paint fumes and exhaust from the power washer (gas). Each room will be repainted, dirt/film free and odor free.

Please stay patient with us as we are committed to keeping the facility clean, maintained and safe for our boarders.

Hi Everyone,

We started this blog to keep you updated on what is going on with our business, get you pictures of events, classes trials - or even show off some of our boarding clients.
We welcome anyone submitting to me pictures comments etc for our blog. Our blog may be updated by myself Paula, my husband Mike or Anna the resort main manager. I am the one in the blue tank top and Anna is with the cool sun glasses. :0)
